Afraid of what you hear on the news?

Take a look at what Sarah Young wrote in her devotional book, Jesus Calling, for December 28th. She writes “love letters” from Jesus to us:

I am Your refuge and Strength, an ever-present Help in trouble. Therefore you don’t need to be afraid of anything – not even cataclysmic circumstances. The media are increasingly devoted to fear-inducing subject matter: terrorism, serial killings, environmental catastrophes. If you focus on such dangers and forget that I am your Refuge in all circumstances, you will become increasingly fearful. Everyday I manifest My grace in countless places and situations, but the media take no notice. I shower not only blessings but also outright miracles on your planet.”

Scripture Pictures has a Scripture photo of Psalm 46:1-2. It’s called:

God is Our Refuge!

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear.

This Scripture Pictures photo was taken by Henry in Maui, Hawaii at a beach near Hana. The sea cave is assessable only by crawling through a narrow opening in the rocks. Every few seconds, the ocean surf rushes in and floods the tiny cave with water. The sea cave symbolizes that God IS our refuge, no matter the circumstances.

Pastor Rick Warren wrote a great article called, Defeat Bad Thoughts by Thinking of Something Better (rickwarren.org/…/defeat-bad-thoughts-by-thinking-of-something-better).

According to Pastor Rick Warren, the more we think about something, the stronger it takes hold of us. He says that this is why the Bible teaches that we should, “Run from anything that gives you the evil thoughts . . . but stay close to anything that makes you want to do right.” (2 Timothy 2:22, LB)

Pastor Rick Warren writes that temptation begins by capturing our attention. What gets our attention triggers our emotions. Our emotions activate our behavior, and we act on what we feel.

Ignoring a temptation is much more effective than fighting it, according to Pastor Warren. Once our mind is on something else, the temptation loses its power… our minds are focused: “Fix your thoughts on Jesus” (Hebrews 3:1 NIV).

Pastor Rick Warren writes that sometimes ignoring a temptation means to walk away from  a tempting situation. For example, turn off the television. Walk away from a group that is gossiping. Leave the theater in the middle of the movie if an inappropriate scene occurs.

In other words, do whatever is necessary to turn our attention to something else.

Spiritually, our mind is your most vulnerable organ, according to Pastor Rick Warren. To reduce temptation, keep our mind occupied with God’s Word. We overcome bad thoughts by thinking of something better. Pastor Warren calls this the principle of replacement, in which we overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).

The enemy can’t get our attention when our mind is preoccupied with something else, according to  Pastor Warren. That’s why the Bible tells us to keep our minds focused: “Fix your thoughts on Jesus” (Hebrews 3:1 NIV).

As Proverbs 4:23 says:  “Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts”.

The Scripture Pictures Team thanks Pastor Rick Warren for his wisdom, teachings, and commitment to the Lord.
